Highlights from the Fisheries Conference 2024

The Fisheries Conference 2024, co-organized by GCE Blue Maritime Cluster and NCE Blue Legasea, was held on December 10 at the stunning Horisont venue in Fosnavåg. With a focus on markets, technology, and profitability in the fisheries industry, the event marked its second year, building on the success of last year's gathering in Brattvåg.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Fosnavåg's maritime heritage, the event featured a packed agenda of insightful presentations, networking opportunities, and an exclusive tour to “Slippen” led by Robert Voldnes, offering a glimpse into Herøy's rich fishing history.  The day concluded with a delightful dinner, and music by Thomas Frekøy Skeide.

Highlights from the day:

Market insights: Erwin Jager from MIL Shipping AS provided valuable insights into key trends shaping the fisheries industry, offering a deeper understanding of current market dynamics.

Financing the fleet: by Marion Toft Remøy of Sparebanken Vest, exploring financial strategies for the industry.

Safety at sea: Anders Amundstad-Balle, Advisor at the Risk Management and Analysis Section, Norwegian Maritime Authority, highlighted the importance of risk reduction and the report on achieving Vision Zero, emphasizing that Vision Zero aims for the goal that no one should lose their life or be seriously injured while traveling at sea.

Innovative solutions: Visionary leaders in the industry like Rita Sævik (Ervik & Sævik) and Lisa & Daniel Pinheiro (PHL Seagold and Leinebris AS) presented groundbreaking approaches in pelagic fisheries and vessel innovation. Nils-Ove Giskegjerde, Operations Manager at Ramoen AS, shared insights into their operations, including the innovative use of fish skin as part of their product portfolio, reflecting their forward-thinking approach. Additionally, Tomas Roaldsnes of Catchwise AS explored the transformative potential of cutting-edge technologies, such as AI, to drive efficiency in the industry. As Tomas noted, “The data is available, and it is up to users to decide how to utilize it," underscoring the need for close collaboration to unlock the full potential of these advancements.

The power of storytelling in shaping perceptions: Anders Bjørnerem, CEO of Nordic Wildfish AS, shared valuable insights on how the industry has often been negatively portrayed and how to shift this narrative. Additionally, Josefine Spiro of JoDa Media discussed the vital role of impactful storytelling in building a positive brand image and transforming public perceptions of the sector.

Research & Collaboration: The topic was explored in a lively panel debate moderated by Arthur Almestad from the Research Council of Norway, focusing on key findings from the FISK 4.0 project. Marcus Hoff Hansen, Stipendiat at Møreforsking AS, shared his research results from the project. Arthur engaged in a dynamic conversation with Petter Kåre Grytten, Sales Manager at Teknotherm AS, Vegard Nesset Hjelvik, Sales Manager at Skipsteknisk AS, Linn Kristin Akslen-Hoel, Research Director at Møreforsking AS, and Knut Tore Aurdal, Project Manager at GCE Blue Maritime Cluster. The discussion highlighted the importance of research and collaboration in driving innovation and sustainability.

Despite the significant challenges facing the industry, there was a clear sense of optimism and a strong drive for innovation. The Fisheries Industry Day 2024 was a great success, providing valuable industry insights and encouraging collaboration, emphasizing its role as an important arena for knowledge exchange and growth within the fisheries segment both in the maritime and marine clusters.
