The Norwegian government has set a goal for the world heritage fjords, including the Geirangerfjord, should be emission-free by 2026. Several assessment projects have already been carried out for this, but so far there are few concrete projects that really tackle the problem. In the coming years, there will be an increasing number of cruise ships that will be able to travel emission-free over shorter distances, which is why we will be looking at the possibility of setting up autonomous filling and charging ships that can meet this need.
Such a concept will require a lot of resources from many disciplines which we believe will be transferable to other ship segments in the cluster.
This project will look at the basis for further developing such a concept and turn it into a proper innovation project.
A potential main project will address a set of issues such as (not intended as an exhaustive list):
- Through close cooperation with shipowners, port authorities and technology suppliers, demonstrate and test an innovative solution to provide auxiliary power and possibly battery charging
- for ships moored and anchored at sea
- Develop guidelines for technical, operational and security aspects for provision of offshore power supply services
- Assess the effect and emission savings of greenhouse gas and pollutants from moored ships or for anchors through verifiable KPIs
- Assess CAPEX and OPEX for the developed solution and optimization of the concept to increase the economic viability of the developed solution, including also looking at the possible implications of introducing autonomous solutions.
