A PROGRAM IN

Maritime Nuclear Propulsion IV

Seminar We continue to build knowledge in the field of Maritime Nuclear Propulsion, and once again, we invite you to a day where we bring together experts from the maritime nuclear value chain – for the fourth consecutive year.

Organizer: GCE Blue Maritime Cluster
Date:
Place: NMK. 7th floor, Ålesund

The members of the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster are pioneering innovation in maritime propulsion. These research projects have garnered international attention. The second NUPROSHIP Project, led by NTNU and Jan Emblemsvåg, recently secured funding to further explore the commercialization of nuclear propulsion. Other initiatives within the cluster and the region are also progressing.

Simultaneously, several international projects are now gaining traction. For instance, we will soon see new reactor designs moving into testing stages, and we expect to see very interesting news in the coming years.

Many steps of development are still needed before nuclear propulsion becomes a reality on commercial ships. Nevertheless, we deem it important to stay  in front of this progress as it is a potential game changer in the green transition.

PROGRAM:

10.30 - 11.30: Registration and lunch

11.30 : Program starts

The Regulatory Landscape:

DNV |Ole Christen Reistad - DNV recently published a paper on the regulatory landscape, mapping what it will take to realize nuclear propulsion.

NEMO (Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization) | Toby Menzies (Attending Remotely) - NEMO was founded in 2024. Already, most of the renowned class societies and main players within the field of nuclear propulsion have signed up as members.

Lloyds Register | Michael North and Jez Sims | Insights into the latest global regularatory developments

Research Projects:

NTNU | Jan Emblemsvåg The NUPROSHIP Project is evolving and earlier this year received funding for step 2 from the Norwegian Research Council. Jan is back to share the latest developments, future plans for NUPROSHIP, and his perspective on nuclear propulsion in general.

IFE (Institute for Energy Technology) | Robert McDonald The Institute for Energy Technology is recognized worldwide for its nuclear research and is now exploring the maritime segment in collaboration with various actors in the maritime cluster. In 2024, several new projects has taken shape, inlcuding a report for the use of SMRs in smaller vessels.

Technology Vendors:

Siemens Energy Global GmbH |Tom Biedermann | Steam turbines for nuclear applications

Emerald Nuclear Inc. | Wesley Deason – CEO (Attending Remotely) US-based Emerald Nuclear Inc. is a new nuclear company with interests in portable power applications, including marine.

ca. 16:00: End of Program

So, if you want to get the latest updates from major the research projects, speak with suppliers in the maritime nuclear value chain, learn more about the regulatory landscape or just gain insights into the potential opportunities, save the date and sign up now.
