Sjøfartsdirektoratet and DNV presented the development of regulations and requirements. The event also gave insight into methanol's viability as a promising alternative fuel to address environmental targets.

Participants also gathered valuable insights into ongoing research projects and market mechanisms crucial for facilitating the industry's shift toward sustainable energy. The evolvement of the economic landscape surrounding carbon credits and quotas, and the REFUEL project – which you can read more about here

In addition to methanol, emphasis was placed on onboard carbon capture and storage technologies. Industry pioneers presented advancements in technology, including a project led by Simon Møkster Shipping that showcased how they are already integrating these innovative solutions into their operations, marking tangible progress in maritime sustainability.

Key take-aways

  • Methanol is projected to become one of the cheapest alternatives to fossil fuels.
  • Initiate the process of acquiring carbon credits now.
  • Onboard carbon capture is even more effective on LNG ships and creates potentially valuable waste.

The event effectively fostered dialogue and collaboration, strengthening the maritime community’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability to meet the evolving global environmental standards.
