Norwegian shipyards in focus
Last week, the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster focused on shipyard activities. We launched our latest report titled "Strengthen the Shipyards," participated in the annual Shipyard Conference, and concluded with Maritime Onboarding at Ulstein Yard.
New report from the initiative “Strenghten the yards”
We launched the latest report from the project "Strengthen the Shipyards" last week. This project is a collaboration among SINTEF Northwest, MAFOSS, iKuben, and the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster. The project "Strengthen the Shipyards" aims to enhance the competitive edge of Norwegian shipyards in the rapidly evolving global shipbuilding market. The report identifies key focus areas of cooperation and innovation for the industry. Notably, the participating shipyards highlighted recruitment challenges and the strategic potential for increased hull construction in Norway, driven by rising international prices and the importance of maintaining shipbuilding capabilities expertise.
Future Development and Collaboration
The findings of our report highlight opportunities in automation, AI implementation in detailed engineering, and standardized ESG reporting methods. The GCE Blue Maritime Cluster will continue coordinating these initiatives, with follow-up workshops planned for 2025.
Defense takes center stage at the annual Shipyard conference
The Shipyard Conference, organized by Norsk Industri, placed special emphasis on defense this year. Discussions centered on maritime security and coastal infrastructure. The government's long-term defense plan presents new opportunities for Norwegian maritime shipbuilding and preparedness. Day two also provided an in-depth look at how the maritime industry will adapt to the use of new technologies AI.
Maritime Onboarding has gained high interest and participation
The week concluded at Ulstein Group with this year's final Maritime Onboarding, attracting over 60 participants from various sectors of the maritime value chain. The program provided a comprehensive journey through a ship's lifecycle: from Norwegian maritime industry history and financing by Sparebank1 SMN, through ship design and engineering by Ulstein Group, to construction and certification processes presented by Ulstein Verft. The program also highlighted Norway's world-leading supplier industry and position as a maritime nation, with presentations from Jets and Olympic Shipping respectively. The day concluded with insights into sustainable business models by Green Yard Kleven, followed by a yard tour at Ulstein Verft, giving participants practical insights into modern shipbuilding operations.
We have shared a selection of photos from the event here.
